Day 57 Chikolongo Campsite

Morning walk led by Patrick so it was quite different but still interesting.  We spotted the pride of lions that we had missed last night – there were 9 lions in total, 1 large male plus 2 young males and 6 lionesses.  They had clearly had dinner and were now lazing in the river bed.   The walk took us past the site of their buffalo kill but there was nothing left apart from the patch of blood and a few rib bones – the hyena and vultures had already had breakfast.

As the season is coming to the end, the campsite is being taken down.  We were highly amused at the speed this was happening and were half expecting our chalet to have been demolished whilst we were out.

Drive to Chikolongo was beautiful, up the escarpment to the top of the hills.  The campsite itself is right night to a river with running water!  Our camp attendant made us a superb fire so we could bbq steak and butternut squash.

Ian was looking forward to a goodnight’s sleep with no hippos or early morning wake up calls but he hadn’t taken into account the frogs – they made a hell of a racket!
