For once the drive took less time than we expected and we
arrived at Kasanka National Park at 11.30 am and after a short game drive
(nothing to see as it is the middle of the day!) reached our camp at
lunchtime. By 4pm we were ready to go to
view the bats having cooked and eaten beef stew, showered and worked out where
to set up camp for later as we would be arriving back at camp in the dark.
We drove to the Fibwe Hide and climbed the 18 metre ladders
to the viewpoint up in the top of a mahogany tree – not a place to be if you
have any fear of heights! We then
descended and walked with a game scout to the bat viewing area in an open space
below the hide, and waited for the sun to set.
At 6 pm the first bats were spotted and then suddenly the whole sky was
full of bats silently flying off into the night. It was an absolutely amazing sight and our
photos definitely do not do it justice.
The drive back to camp was interesting as it was now pitch
black, the track was very narrow and there were lots of green eyes (puku)
staring at us. We arrived back to find a
roaring camp fire and the guys waiting to ensure we returned safely.
