A sleepless night due to mosquitoes in the tent which was
not the best start when getting up at 4.30 am! We decamped and were through the
gate on the road to Soussevlei by 5 am with the hordes all dashing to see the
sun rise over the dunes. The tar road
ends after about 50 km and then there is a 5 km section of deep sand. We were amused that everyone else stopped at
the start of the sand to let the air out of their tyres but we just sailed on
past – the advantage of a Landrover.
We walked to Deadvlei and watched the sunrise over the dunes
and then started climbing our own sand dune behind Deadvlei. Rather than walking to the bottom of the
ridge line I just climbed (crawled) up the side of the dune – really not a good
idea and by the time I reached the ridge I was already knackered. The climb to the top of the dune took about
an hour and a half and was exhausting with the sun already blazing down. The
descent was much more fun!! The views from the top were fantastic of the sea of
dunes.
Had breakfast in the dunes and then drove back to Sesriem to
explore the Sesriem Canyon. By now it
was mid-day so perhaps not the best time to be walking in a canyon with no
shade from the sun. Last time we were in
Sesriem it was much greener and it is clear that we are at the end of the dry
season and they are in desperate need of rain.
Ian had wanted to come here 4 years ago to swim in the rock pools. We did eventually find a pool of water but we
certainly had no intention of swimming in it now as it was green and stagnant.
Back to camp for a relaxing afternoon!
