Headed North into the mountains and took a track off to the
left down a ravine as it looked interesting.
We descended the ravine past oryx down to the Hoarusib river which still
had water flowing. There were lots of
signs of elephant so we decided to follow the river through the Purros Canyon
as far as we could – you can’t drive down the river bed once it reaches the
skeleton coast park. Having not really
done any proper river crossings on our trip we had great fun all morning
zig-zagging back and forth across the river.
We saw loads of cows but sadly no desert-adapted elephants.
At the bottom of the canyon we headed back to Purros via the
high plains route rather than going back through the river – the round trip had
taken about 5 hours.
We headed North again with the aim of visiting a traditional
Himba village , however, once again we were misled by the sign posts and went
in completely the wrong direction. The
views however deeper into Koakoland were magnificent.
