We drove up to the Himba village to take a look but decided
not to go and visit as it felt like an intrusion as the villagers were busy
tending their goats and going about their daily activities. Instead we headed back down the Hoarusib river
to see if we could see any elephants. As
yesterday we criss-crossed the river down to the bottom of the canyon with no
sign of elephants. The route then took
us across the high mountain plains (with semi-arid desert as far the eye can
see) on a 4x4 track for about 100 km to the Hoarib river.
Driving up this river bed we had more luck and spotted a
large elephant eating from a tree.
Further down river we came across a whole family so our long
route back to Sesfontein had been worthwhile.
By this time it was already 4.30 and we still had about 80
km to go along a really tricky dusty track which kept disappearing or spitting
in different directions. Finally we made it back to Sesfontein and restocked
our beer supply in the local bar before heading south for another 30 km to our
campsite for the night.
