Drove to the lodge for breakfast and had a long chat with
the owner about the collapse of the SA Rand – unfortunately we had got our
money out just before the exchange rate plummeted (typical!).
We decided to go hiking in the hills behind our chalet and
chose a medium length route – about 12 km.
Setting off at 10.30 was probably not wise but we had plenty of water
and there was a nice breeze. The walk
took us past an old car that had been used by diamond thieves as a getaway –
this is where they got stopped and the car shows all the bullet holes.
The route soon headed up into the hills and
we were surprised at how extensive they are – they don’t give the same
impression from the chalet. Somehow we
managed to miss our green waymarkers and found ourselves heading along one of
the mountain bike routes. Rather than
turning round we ploughed on and eventually found another walking path which
brought us back to our original planned descent. The sign warned us that it was a steep
descent and they were not kidding – we were glad we hadn’t tried to climb up
this way as it really would have been almost impossible. In the end our lovely little stroll turned
into a 6 hour trudge but we got to see kudu, klipspringers, rock dassies and a
striped mouse.
For dinner we headed into Aus to the Bahnhof Hotel restaurant
- we were the only customers but the food was delicious. Back in our chalet we found the wildlife had
come in to see us with a mouse sitting under the fridge eating the wires and
then getting into Ian’s rucksack to try to hide!
