By the time we had breakfasted, packed up camp and
re-inflated the tyres it was 10.30 – we are definitely on a bit of a go slow
today. Last time we drove this route we
went on the scenic D707 which runs between the dunes and the mountains. The scenery is dramatic but our memory of the
road was it took for ever, so we decided to use the more direct C27 which is
still very beautiful as it heads through the Tiras Mountains. On route we stopped at a little café at Betta
and reminisced about the last time we were there – it has expanded over the
last 2 years but is still a lovely place to stop.
Arrived at Klein Aus Vista in time for a quick beer in the
bar and picked up one of their bbq packs before heading off to the chalet, 7 km
from the main lodge. The bbq pack is
interesting in itself consisting of oryx steaks, bratwurst sausages, baked
spuds, greek style salad and bizarrely cheese and tomato toasties – all
absolutely delicious. Our chalet has a
fab view over the desert and the Aus to Luderitz railway line. Two years ago they told us it was nearly
ready to open so Ian had been hoping to take photos of a train on the
line. Sadly the railway has not yet
opened due to sand dunes blowing over the tracks – we are totally bemused by this as it
was pretty obvious flaw to us.
